The M.I.C Model for Better Feedback Conversations
Productive Feedback Motivates, Informs, and Connects
Brad explains how the M.I.C. Model works
This triple forms the MIC Model for giving effective feedback.
To give effective feedback in both everyday and more formalized situations (like performance reviews) you should strive to:
1. Motivate - provide emotion, efficacy, energy, inspiration, and incentive
2. Inform - give direction, data, information, guidance, and possibilities
3. Connect - build a relationship, show support, listen empathetically, be present, and be human
The model is important because often people give feedback that only does one of these, for instance, a high-energy boss who emotionally motivates but does not provide useful direction or connect in a supportive human way.
Scientifically, the MIC model builds on the sciences of motivational, cognitive, and social psychology to provide a more holistic approach to feedback.
Giving feedback that delivers the complete triple can be quite difficult and nuanced. We have thus developed a number of habits for feedback conversations that enable you to provide the type of feedback that meets all three criteria.
